Francisco José de Goya y Lucientes, 1746 - 1828
Goya was a Spanish romantic painter and printmaker. He is considered the most important Spanish artist of the late 18th and early 19th centuries and throughout his long career was a commentator and chronicler of his era.

Los Caprichos was published in 1799 and Goya is thought to have sold only 27 copies before withdrawing it from circulation due to the Inquisition. Most of the remaining copies of the edition were later purchased by King Charles IV of Spain. The work was an enlightened, tour-de-force critique of 18th century Spain, and humanity in general.

Not only are the works we have from the first edition of this suite, but also one of the earliest pulls (after the first 25 or so pulls were taken a scratch appeared on plate 45, which can be seen on all subsequent editions. The set we have is before the scratch.) Goya himself had a small number of copies bound in mottled calf leather of which ours is one.

The subtlety of tone and lush quality of the aquatint printing in these etchings in unrivalled and will be exactly as Goya had intended. These works are extremely collectable, very rare pieces and this is most likely a once in a lifetime opportunity to see and own them.
