Alberto Giacometti, Swiss, 1901 - 1966
In 1920, having completed a formal art training, Giacometti traveled to extensively, particularly in Italy, where he was deeply affected by African and Egyptian art and by the masterpieces of Giotto and Tintoretto. He later lived in Paris and then Geneva.
Giacometti was a participant in the Surrealist circle until 1934 and during the early 1940s, he became friends with Pablo Picasso, and Jean-Paul Sartre.
Major Giacometti exhibitions have been held at the Tate Gallery, London, the Museum of Modern Art, New York, the Louisiana Museum, Denmark, and the Stedelijk Museum, Amsterdam.
