At first glance, the new series of work by John Crossley suggests a playful, witty exploration of a kaleidoscopic world of intense colour. Each painting is a small inviting object commanding the space around it, drawing in the viewer rather as a beam of sunlight seen through a window mesmerises us with our associations of warmth and growth and joy.

In common with the artist’s earlier works, all the images are formed from meticulously constructed layers of paint, the colours relating to each other in a joyful celebration of the power of colour to stir our imagination.

Each image has a line of reflection, one world apparently mirroring the other. Closer inspection reveals a shift as we look from one world into its reflection, bringing to mind the ease with which our eyes can be confused by the mirrored expanses of lakes, ponds and glass. The reflected world may be so nearly identical that we cannot discern the original from the copy, but here in John Crossley’s paintings we are invited to contemplate the notions of mirroring and reflecting.
