Born in Essex in 1952, John Crossley studied sculpture at St Martin's School of Art from 1970-73, taking postgraduate sculpture there from 1973-74. He went on to work for Anthony Caro and to win Sainsbury and Arts Council Awards in 1974 and 1976. In 1978 he was elected member of The London Group.
John's work has been exhibited widely in the UK, Europe, America and Asia. He has had numerous solo exhibitions including at The Camden Art Centre, The Milton, Harriet Green, AIR, and The Cello Factory galleries in London - as well as solo shows in Sunderland, Rochdale, Colchester, and North Wales. His work can be found in a number of public collections, including the London Borough of Camden, Sunderland Arts Centre, Rochdale Art Centre, in the print collections of the Fitzwilliam Museum, Cambridge, and the Picasso Museum, Paris. Commissions include Unilever PLC and Hillingdon Hospital in Uxbridge. In 2015 he was elected an associate member of the Royal Watercolour Society and in 2017 elected full member and Vice President. John has taken part in several residencies including Triangle workshop in New York, Aldeburgh Beach Lookout, Suffolk and more recently with the Casa Zia Lina foundation on Elba, Italy.
John has taught widely, including at Chelsea College of Art and Design where he was senior lecturer. He also managed Camden Arts Centre from 1975-85. He lives and works in Suffolk.
