Mezzotint is an intaglio method of printmaking. Mezzotint is historically significant because it was the first method that allowed for tones without line- or dot-based techniques like cross-hatching. Like aquatint, mezzotint is often combined with other intaglio techniques. It was most popular in the eighteenth century but has declined in usage since the nineteenth century.
