Olly: Why I chose Hackney Marshes:
I'm a Londoner born and raised, exiled in 2019 to the West Country. During lockdown, I thought a lot about my former home in Clapton, Hackney, E5. The flat where my two children were born. The marshes where I walked, ran, partied. And even once got bitten in the face by a dog while meditating. It's a special place: not quite countryside, not quite city. The comfort of nature with an urban edge. There are cows but no park wardens. You can pick blackberries but you'll probably step on a used condom, maybe even a body. I love the marshes and I miss them. My sestude is inspired by a recurring fantasy that combines sleep deprivation, running and London's incessant roar. Maybe there is a vortex. I just never found it.
Hackney Marshes by Olly Davy
In E5 where summer nights fizzle and crack I twitch to a distant roar until dawn when I run on a desperate mission to the source my brain: a zoetrope jangling with insomniac adrenaline that wants and also does not want to find some awesome vortex churning down buildings, people, cars but it is not apocalypse, no, just traffic on the A12
