Sun and Moon (the Delos diptych)
Apollo!
Torn late from his mother's
sea-circled womb
he rises in showers of gold
eager to see himself
in the watery mirror
that lies below.
Ap-ol-lo-here-too
First words of daytime
bubble up from
deep throats of doves.
Kalimera.
Destined for the most
fleeting of meetings
the sun-god shuns the murmur
of his twin-sister's slumber.
Sun rises
born before the birth of time.
Artemis?
Slid from her mother's
mountain belly
she pulls the cloud-blankets
around her face
then pushes them aside
with a shy smile.
Ar-tem-is-you
First words of night-time
are hooted from
the cypress-fringed owlnest.
Kalispera.
Not wishing to be woken
from a sleep too deep
the moon-goddess light-bathed in silver
shrugs off her brother's shaking.
Moon rises
out of the mists before time.
