Introductory Essay

We are delighted to welcome one of the UK's most powerful and consistently original printmakers back to The Print Room for a show that almost didn't happen. In March 2020, Jason Hicklin was invited by the European Commission to curate a body work as part of a cultural celebration of EU member states. Jason has nurtured an ongoing fascination with the Irish landscape and his depictions of the coastlines of Mayo, Donegal and Kerry created on a series of artists residencies and visits spanning 25 years, were eagerly anticipated in a major exhibition due to be held in the spring of last year.

Of course, 12 months on, the world is a very different place. A global pandemic and Brexit mean that this show will not go ahead as originally planned. This work is too good to be left unseen however, so we are excited to share with you a series of over 70 etchings, watercolours, monotypes and boxed sets that are compelling evidence of Jason's deep engagement with this beautiful landscape on the edge of Europe.
