  • During the first half of the twentieth century, the city of Paris developed into one of Western Art History's most...
Pablo Picasso, 'Sculpteur Devant sa Sellette, Baer avec un Spectateur Barbu', 1964

During the first half of the twentieth century, the city of Paris developed into one of Western Art History's most formidable centres of artistic innovation and genius. The Paris School (Ecole de Paris) is used to describe the group of artists that lived and worked in Paris during this period. The city's bohemian reputation was particularly appealing to those with more avant-garde interests, with artists travelling to the city from across Europe and the United States. Artists who flocked to the city include Pablo Picasso, Henri Matisse, Wassily Kandinsky, Piet Mondrian, Georges Braque, Joan Miró, Amedeo Modigliani, and Marc Chagall.

Although the School of Paris is not considered to include a particular art movement or institution, several highly influential art movements were born during this period such as Surrealism, Dada and Orphism. The city provided a space for artistic community, where artists challenged tradition in relation to style, subject matter and exhibition practices.

Two artists in particular - Picasso and Braque - pioneered a new way of seeing through the development of Cubism, which aimed to reflect the modern age. For a number of years, the pair were considered to be inseparable, with Braque commenting "We were like mountain-climbers roped together". Equally, Picasso recalled - "Almost every evening, either I went to Braque's studio or Braque came to mine". When Chagall first moved to Paris in 1910, he already held Picasso's work to high regard, going as far as to ask his friend, the French Poet Guillaume Apollinaire for an introduction. All three artists - Braque, Picasso and Chagall explored the art of printmaking during their time in Paris, with each pushing the boundaries of the artistic practice in style and practice.

  • Verve Magazine

At the forefront of printmaking during this period was the Mourlot Frères studio, with Fernand Mourlot being synonymous with the modern resurgence of lithography. In 1937, the Mourlot Frères studio began a fruitful collaboration with the editor Tériade, founder of the legendary Parisian art review magazine, 'Verve'. Picasso, Chagall, Mirò and Braque all created series of lithographs for Verve magazine. These include Braque's Carnets Intimes (Diaries), Chagall’s La Bible, and Picasso’s La Comédie Humaine.

  • La Comédie Humaine

Picasso was a long-time admirer of the work of Honoré de Balzac, the great 19th century French realist playwright and novelist. In 1954, Tériade commissioned Picasso to create a series of illustrations in response to Balzac’s greatest work, La Comédie Humaine.

La Comédie Humaine  comprises 137 interconnected short stories and essays of life in the Bourbon Restoration period after the French Revolution, addressing a number of topics such as social status, money, sex, women’s role in society, as well as maternal and paternal roles.

Tériade dedicated an entire issue of Verve to Picasso’s work which consisted of a suite of 180 drawings and a set of twelve colour lithographs after works in coloured crayon. The lithographs were printed by Atelier Mourlot in Paris, directly under the artist’s supervision.

  • Outside of Verve magazine, all three artists produced a number of other works. Prior to La Bible, Chagall created a series of sixteen etchings in 1926 titled Les Sept Péchés Capitaux (The Seven Deadly Sins). Together with La Bible, the series is representative of the over-arching religious themes that would dominate Chagall’s artistic oeuvre throughout his career.
