Once Upon a Time in London
-
Once Upon a Time in London 'This series was inspired by an unlikely combination of people - Vincent Van Gogh and Quentin Tarantino. When I first saw the film Once upon a time in Hollywood I was so unsettled by where I thought the film was heading that I almost left the cinema. However, Tarantino created his own more optimistic version of the narrative that rewrote history, and the resulting film is one of my favourites. I thought that this was such a lovely idea that I decided to give the same treatment to the life of Vincent Van Gogh. In my narrative, Vincent, who had spent a very happy time as a young man in London, decided to return here after the artistically glorious but personally disastrous time spent in the south of France. This series shows some anecdotal moments from his life in London in which he has a dog, a girlfriend and an exhibition at the Chelsea Arts Club where of course all his paintings sold.'- Mychael Barratt, 2023 -

Life Imitating Art
'The Life Imitating Art series has been one of the most important and enduring themes of my artistic life. Almost always set in a recognisable London location, all of the figurative references are lifted from my favourite works from the history of art. Many are curated by theme so lots of food and drinking references for Borough Market, dog references for Battersea Park, near the Battersea Dogs Home, and 1920s and 30s German art references for Jermyn Street. My hope is that there will be one homage in every piece that allow people to understand the concept and then they can enjoy figuring out the others.'
