Eames Fine Art are delighted to welcome Ross Loveday back to the gallery for this, his seventh solo exhibition with us. 'Beyond the Lines' is a collection of over 30 powerful, new paintings on canvas and board.

These works are all landscape-inspired though heavily concerned with capturing and playing with light, the changing weather and even the mood of a landscape, sometimes to the extent that works veer towards complete abstraction so far removed are they from the confines of the actual landscapes they were initially based on.

This collection of paintings are also stongly influenced by an incredible new series of carborundum prints which Ross produced last year with master printmaker Andrew Smith. These in turn were inspired by the firey, smokey, music of Miles Davis. Like his musical hero, Ross's works are innovative and exciting but stick to strong simple lines and gestures which linger, reappear in different works and stick with you, so pleasurably for a long time.

My paintings are always evolving and I feel that this is my strongest work to date. I have pushed myself at times to make the work as honest as possible - but with references to past work and I'm pleased that I have achieved this. Many of the paintings are about erosion of the Norfolk and Suffolk landscape, which has influenced my direction and colour. People have commented that the paintings are more colourful and looking at the collection as a whole I tend to agree and perhaps it was a release.

Ross Loveday has long admired the work of Howard Hodgkin, so when he got the chance in 2023 to work with master printmaker Andrew Smith - who worked very closely with Hodgkin printing many of his carborundum prints - he leapt at the opportunity.

Ross and Andrew worked together over a number of days on these large and adventurous prints and then later, back at his own studio, Ross continued to make new work using these new techniques.
