First Impressions: 19 printmakers meet 19 artists
Current viewing_room
First Impressions is a collaborative project between Eames Fine Art and the writers’ group ‘26’. The project involved 19 writers visiting 19 artists, in person, at their printmaking studios. The artists introduced their studio working space to the writers – discussing how they work, including their individual techniques, their routines, the joys of printmaking and, of course the trials and challenges they face in the studio. They all demonstrated their printmaking and introduced the presses they use. Their conversations revealed wonderful personal insights, and stories about their art and their working habits. The writers have subsequently written a poem honouring what they learnt about the artist and their work through the collaboration. These writers have been recorded reading their poems, and the original meetings were all filmed by the two people on their phones. The award-winning cinematographer and director Mike Southon has edited these films into one fascinating documentary – giving us a beautiful, engaging and personal view into 19 printmakers’ studios.
