The contrast between these visual bookends is remarkable. Broad rectangular forms give way to radiating circles,
splashes and intricate layers of colour. Yet throughout, Hoyland’s conviction remained firm: colour can shape
space and carry intense feeling. Even the apparently simple early prints contain irregular edges and painterly
surfaces, revealing a physical engagement that takes increasingly adventurous forms in his later work. -

Our continuing collaboration with the Hoyland family and studio has enabled us to bring editioned prints together
with early works on paper, preparatory studies and rare colour trial proofs. These offer glimpses of images in the
process of becoming. A familiar gesture changes character against a different ground; a new colour alters the
balance of an entire composition. -
Working with Master Printers including Bob Saich at Advcanced Graphics and Kip Gresham at Curwen, Hoyland
could separate a mark from its colour, test alternatives and build luminosity through successive layers. The print
studio became a place of shared invention, with ideas moving between printmaking and painting. -
We invite you to follow this story through the works themselves: to look closely at what changes, recognise what
endures, and discover how the disciplines of screenprinting gave Hoyland such freedom.
