Every print sold comes with a free copy of the accompanying book 'A Common Place', which includes reproductions of all the artworks and poems created for the project

Rebecca was paired with the writer Wendy Jones for the Common Place project.

Rebecca: Our Common Place is wild water.  Wendy and I started the project during peak lockdown which meant that we couldn't really do many of the things we liked, so we started to talk together about the things we missed most, and one of those which we both agreed was very important to us was being next to the sea.
I really enjoyed thinking about all my memories of the sea, particularly of all the family holidays I've enjoyed and the simple thrill of being so close to nature. For me, the sea is a symbol of freedom and power and I really enjoyed revisiting old photographs and sketches and getting to grips with this beautiful mass of water through my art.

Wendy: I like swimming in outdoor water. Above all I just like watching it; it's the movement which is so mesmerising, it makes you feel like you're part of something so much bigger than yourself, but at the same time, water is deceptively dangerous and it can be frightening.
As I started to write my piece for the Common Place project I was reminded of a friend who drowned in the sea some years ago. We underestimate wild water, it is ruthless and literally without pity. We anthropomorphise it, wrongly, because the sea isn't cruel; it's just the sea, it's nature.

Wild Water by Wendy Jones

We stand at water's edge

and touch the vastness

of nature's ingenuity.

Sea-river-ocean-lake,

an elemental super-power,

life's progenitor,

bidding us

live free,

be wild, beguiled

by glimpses

of eternity,

entranced by liberation songs.

Wild water took a friend.

Swam out far, body failed,

current's force misjudged.

North Sea

stole her breath,

pitiless.

Nature deceives and thieves our dreams,

indifferent to our imagery.
