The silence broken 

by pick on stone

grunt and moan

chip and clank

as this sleet-soaked man

drills an iron jumper

plugs a feather 

hammers the tare

again and again

until the steel sings

and the granite

splits

and one more turn

on the rusting derrick handle

echoes his thought:

if one stone can hide a waiting angel

imagine a quarry.
