John Crossley | The Shape of Things: New Paintings

This series of new paintings is, on some level, an explication of a series of juxtapositions, of form, of colour, of suspension and dynamism, space filled and void. The precision of line and of shape is counterposed by their relative arrangement: sharp slices of colour concertina across the page, tilting into each other, meeting at oblique angles, askew and yet all in its right place. Whilst individual segments assemble to form composite shapes, the vibrancy and sheer variety of their colours serves to interrupt these shapes, simultaneously constructing and deconstructing, so that one could not say which is more salient, form or colour. And yet for all their formalism, what is most salient is the character of these works; they are animate, jaunty and celebratory.
