Eduardo Paolozzi | The Art of Pop Collage

This exciting exhibition brings together a curated selection of maquettes, collages, and silkscreen prints by one of Britain’s most pioneering and influential postwar artists, and the continuing resonance of this visual language across generations of artists.

Together, these artists reveal collage as both a method and a metaphor — a way of thinking that continually reassembles the fragments of modern experience into something vital, humorous, and human.

We have an amazing collection of original collages, and the screenprints they were created for along with plaster maquetttes by Paolozzi - many of these never exhibited before - straight from Kip Gresham's personal archives.

Alongside Paolozzi's own work we will be showing some of the other artists influenced and inspired by his groundbreaking Pop-Collage art, including artworks for sale by Joe Tilson, Peter Blake and one of our newest contemporary artists to join Eames Fine Art: Maxine Gregson.

Throughout his career, Paolozzi returned repeatedly to the motif of the head, using the familiar image to express invention, fragmentation, and reconstruction. Drawing upon sources as diverse as classical sculpture, mechanised forms, popular media, and cybernetic imagery, Paolozzi disassembles and reconfigures the human form into something simultaneously familiar and futuristic; comic and foreboding.
Many of the works in this show came directly from the studio and personal collection of master printmaker Kip Gresham who printed the silkscreens with Paolozzi in the 90s. We are showing the extremely rare, actual collages made by Paolozzi which were used for the subsequent silkscreens. These works, never exhibited or offered for sale before, offer a rare insight into Paolozzi’s creative process and his enduring fascination with technology, popular culture, and the fragmented beauty of modern life.

Plaster Maquettes

Paolozzi’s plaster maquettes offer a rare and intimate view into the restless imagination of one of Britain’s most inventive post-war artists.These small-scale works reveal the artist’s process of translation and visualisation of artworks in a 3d form: from collage to object, from fragment to form, from the human to the mechanical.

Amongst the rarities and collectable works we have in this sale, is an extremely special melamine panel which has been silkscreened and then hand painted in oil by Paolozzi, this panel was a unique design for part of the famous Tottenham Court Road tube station mosaic which was completed in 1986.

Presented alongside Paolozzi in this exhibition are works by artists who share, extend, or reinterpret his approach to collage. Peter Blake and Joe Tilson, fellow founders of British Pop, embraced similar strategies of appropriation and cultural play, reworking imagery from advertising, celebrity, and design. Kurt Schwitters, an earlier pioneer, provides the movement’s spiritual foundation: many of his collages made from collected discarded objects anticipated Paolozzi’s fascination with found materials and visual reconstruction. Maxine Gregson, representing a contemporary voice, reimagines the collage tradition for the digital and post-graphic age, layering nostalgia and social commentary through print and graphics.
