Barrington Tobin | Gable Court Paintings
The filmmaker Louis Rizzo-Naudi has recently completed a short film about Barrington and his work featuring many of the paintings from the Gable Court collection. -
Barrington repeatedly reminds us that making painting is an encounter more than a premeditated act. Paintings need to be allowed to happen beyond the artist’s attempt to assert control, to ‘let the canvas unfurl’ as he puts it. This could suggest a somewhat passive organic creation, where ‘one thing leads to another’ and Barrington is quite happy to serve as a channel for the process and wait for meaning to emerge. That this process is hallmarked by a series of recurring themes and formal elements is, however, significant. -

Is this where meaning can be found? Everywhere these images share a rich archaeology of layers, where palimpsests are glimpsed in one work and then cast anew in a gleaming fresh layer of paint, pastel or ink in a separate but related iteration. This is an articulate visual language that has evolved over more than three decades and The Road to Gable Court is the first attempt to chart this evolution by examining this new body of paintings alongside a curation of works from Barrington's archive. The result is a chance to discover a fresh aspect on this most elusive of artists by taking a fascinating look at the path that has led him here.
