Shaped by his move from London to the West Country in the wake of the Covid pandemic, these ambitious works on canvas, panel and in carborundum revealed Barrington in fine form and clearly exhilarated by his new surroundings.

While this might suggest that these works represent a break from the past or a new beginning, for the seasoned follower of Barrington's work, welcome echoes and traces of what has come before start to emerge. And indeed, this should come as no surprise to anyone who has been paying close attention to Barrington over the years. He has always eschewed a linear chronology when talking about his work and recurring motifs and compositional devices have been a pleasing refrain throughout his career. The result is beguiling and immersive as these meditations in sumptuous colour, rendered in supple, shifting brushstrokes appear before us: beautiful, sonorous creations that appear more summoned into being than painted, humming at a precise yet benign pitch before the viewer.
